Clever Koi: Where Comfort Meets Cause

There’s something about the first cool hint of fall in Arizona that makes you crave comfort food. The kind that arrives steaming, fragrant, and layered with flavors that feel both familiar and new. For me, that pull often leads straight to Clever Koi.


Walking through the doors, there’s an energy that’s hard to pin down—part urban buzz, part cozy hideaway. It’s the kind of place where you can slip into a booth for date night, gather friends for cocktails, or even sit solo at the bar with a bowl of ramen that feels like it was made just for you. And right now, the vibe is even more irresistible. With spooky décor already in full swing, Clever Koi has leaned into the season, making it clear that “it’s fall, y’all” the moment you step inside.


The menu leans into Asian comfort in the best way possible. Ramen bowls that warm from the inside out. Wok-fried noodles that snap with flavor. Steamed buns that arrive pillowy soft, ready to be devoured in a few too-fast bites. And whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, or just picky about flavor, there’s a plate waiting with your name on it.



But what elevates Clever Koi from a “favorite noodle spot” to a true dining experience is the way food and drink dance together here. Justin behind the bar is an absolute delight, creating cocktails that surprise and charm with every pour. The Pandan B-Bop, built on cachaça, pandan liqueur, Becherovka, pineapple, lemon, vanilla orgeat, and passionfruit purée—condensed-milk punched into silky balance—might just be the best cocktail I’ve had all year. It’s lush, bright, and layered with a kind of tropical nostalgia that lingers long after the glass is empty.


And just when I thought the bar couldn’t impress me more, Justin pulled out another stunner: the “Rinse & Repeat”, a clever mix of honeycomb-infused cachaça, fig-infused Velvet Falernum, and coconut fat-washed Aperol. It was bold and nuanced, the kind of cocktail that proves Clever Koi isn’t just keeping up with Phoenix’s cocktail scene—they’re setting the pace.


The Jade Mist Wander offered a lighter touch, almost sherbet-like in flavor, and was the perfect way to end the evening—a playful palate cleanser that kept the night feeling fresh.



September’s Bun of the Month, a clever mini take on eggplant Parmesan, felt like a perfect little bite—savory, comforting, and purposeful, since $1 from each went to the Arizona Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for National Suicide Prevention Month. And while I’ll admit I’m not usually an avocado fan (I know, I know), the avocado crab Rangoon is a must-order here—crisp and creamy in equal measure, and absolutely magical alongside the Pandan B-Bop.


We rounded out the meal with Shaking Beef, rich and deeply seasoned, and their take on Pad Se Ew, a wok-fired comfort dish that’s both familiar and new in Clever Koi’s hands.


September also brings National Dumpling Day on the 26th, a perfect excuse to order a few extra plates and celebrate the food we all secretly crave. And of course, there’s always the “It Takes Two” special—two noodle or rice dishes plus four cocktails or a bottle of wine for $70—a deal that makes Clever Koi as much a date night destination as it is a neighborhood favorite.


But beyond the bowls, buns, and cocktails, what stays with me is Clever Koi’s heart. This isn’t just a place for comfort food; it’s a place that reminds us food can be a catalyst for connection, for joy, and even for change. And with pumpkins and ghoulish details already dotting the space, it’s also proof that sometimes the best dining experiences come with a little seasonal spirit stirred in.



Eat. Love. Travel. Play. And sometimes, do it all with dumplings, cocktails, and a little extra purpose.
