Luxury Stays: Afternoon Tea at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, Ireland

If there’s one place in Dublin I’ll stay time and time again, it’s The Shelbourne. And if you’ve been following my travels, you may have noticed a pattern: if a hotel has afternoon tea service, there’s a good chance I’m staying there. I do like being conveniently located near a scone.

At The Shelbourne, afternoon tea is part of what keeps drawing me back. A beautiful room, a pot of tea, and a tiered stand give me every reason to settle in and make an occasion of the afternoon. Having all of that right where I’m staying? That’s my kind of travel planning.

The pleasure started before we sat down. Crystal chandeliers, flowers, and plush furnishings gave the hotel that lovely sense of arrival. I enjoy a place that makes getting dressed and going to tea feel like an event. The Shelbourne certainly delivered on the setting, and I was ready to settle in.

Choosing the tea is part of the ritual for me, so I appreciated having a selection to explore rather than treating the pot as an afterthought. The choices ranged from lighter teas to more robust blends. With sandwiches, scones, and sweets on their way, there was every reason to take a little time over the decision. This was an afternoon worth sitting down for.

Then came the tiered stand, which is always the moment I start assessing both the selection and my ambition. Our service included finger sandwiches, warm scones, and an assortment of small pastries. The sandwiches on offer included chicken, smoked salmon, and cucumber and cream cheese, though anyone who knows me knows the salmon would not be my first reach. I was much more interested in saving room for the scones, especially with clotted cream and house-made jam involved.

The pastries deserved attention of their own. Macarons, chocolate cake, and those carefully finished little sweets made the stand as enjoyable to look at as it was to work through. I like the variety of afternoon tea: a savory bite, another pour, a scone, and then the very reasonable decision to try one more thing. Smaller portions can make a surprisingly convincing argument for a second dessert.

The service helped the afternoon unfold at an easy pace. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, and soft classical music added to the atmosphere. There was time to enjoy what was on the table and to appreciate the room around us. That’s a big part of why I make space for afternoon tea when I travel. It gives me a reason to stop moving for a while and enjoy where I am.

I left The Shelbourne happy we’d made tea part of our Dublin visit. The setting, the service, and the pleasure of working through that stand together made it an afternoon I remember fondly. If you share my enthusiasm for scones and a beautiful hotel, this is one to look into for your own trip. Menus change, so check the current tea offering and mention any dietary requirements when you reserve.
